00:08:24 Justine (she/her): Question: I’m very grateful to have been given the gift of yoga from the universe - I’m in a place and time to be able to learn these teachings. 00:11:23 Susanna Barkataki (she/her): Reflections on what is arising - in the practice and or yoga in your life now 00:12:39 Susanna Barkataki (she/her): Reflections on what is arising - in the practice and or yoga in your life now 00:15:38 Constina: I am grateful the practice of yoga for giving me the honoring the space and time with the ancestors both mine and the ones who practiced or help create the discipline; I am grateful for the yoga community both near and far; I am grateful for being able to share the practice of yoga with others. 00:17:08 Constina: What comes up for me is how I can deepen my practice not only for myself but for those I encounter in my sessions/practices 00:17:28 Justine (she/her): How do we bring our “authentic self” to the teachings - as a facilitator - without making it NOT about yoga? 00:17:53 Justine (she/her): I’m not making this a clear question - maybe someone can help me with the wording. 🙂 00:19:49 Bonnie (she/they): Stories! 00:19:50 Justine (she/her): What’s the age group again? 00:20:02 Justine (she/her): Are they all in the same group? 00:20:52 Justine (she/her): Or are you dividing them by age level. 00:23:00 Bonnie (she/they): I think it's worse b/c pandemic funding has completely ended. 00:23:07 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "I think it's worse b..." with ☝️ 00:23:09 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "I think it's worse b..." with 💯 00:27:36 Justine (she/her): Attention spans are different for each age group: A question like this occurred before: build relationships - find out who they are; have a structure in place and choice built into the class. Depending on the age group: there are games you can incorporate into the class… along with stories - also if you can find out if they have an SEL program within the district - tie the SEL competencies into the yogic principles (focus on one at a time)… and a story that ties with that principle… include singing/mantra! 00:28:10 Bonnie (she/they): Age groups: Separately would be ideal, but sometimes in the studio setting they get combined to have a "critical mass" to run the class. When I had blended age groups, i usually entrusted / enlisted the older ones to help with the younger ones. 00:28:43 Jessica Jacovitch (she/her): The story of hanuman and the great leap was a crowd favorite with the group was working with. We used blocks to make our own leaps around the classroom. Super fun and silly. Things like yoga dice can also help it be a bit more interactive or play like. I liked to structure it with a game for "warm ups" and then have a similar, simple sequence each week with a different story or shared intention. 00:29:02 Justine (she/her): Also, I wouldn’t sustain poses for a long time - esp for the younger crowd 🙂 00:29:14 Bonnie (she/they): Mandala coloring is a way to teach meditation / mindfulnes that appeals to kids through adults. 00:29:28 Constina: I like the approach to start with story time and interweaving the theme of the story with the movements. 00:29:32 Justine (she/her): Bring in Instruments!! 00:29:33 Jessica Jacovitch (she/her): Kids love breathwork too! 00:29:52 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "Kids love breathwork..." with ♥️ 00:30:37 Constina: Also bring in a game of Yogi says/ like Simon says with the focus on asanas. 00:30:44 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "Also bring in a game..." with ☝️ 00:30:59 Bonnie (she/they): If not all kids have an adult with them, I used to make a "yoga passport" so that only the kids could come in. 00:31:10 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "If not all kids have..." with ❤️ 00:31:36 Justine (she/her): It’s okay to have behavior guidelines/expectations written out in advance and to go over them at the beginning of class. (Referencing classroom management) 🙂 00:32:23 Eilene Franco-Brooks: I am at a different school (20 schools) every afternoon. Most are K-8 schools. I often don't know what group I am getting until I get there. I have anywhere from 6-25 kids at a time. I have about 40 minutes each day. It is tricky to be prepared. 00:33:59 Jessica Jacovitch (she/her): Things like legs up the wall & having a contest to see how many blocks their classmates can stack on top of their feet or making an "obstacle course" with yoga props together were frequently requested activities. 00:34:03 Justine (she/her): I like it when people teach children how the brain and nervous systems work! 00:34:48 Jessica Jacovitch (she/her): Replying to "I like it when peopl..." me too! 00:35:55 dana (she/her): Reacted to "I like it when peopl..." with ❤️ 00:44:39 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "me too!" with ♥️ 00:45:08 Justine (she/her): Linking on to your “appropriating” comment and secular issue - I was taught that to make it “trauma-informed” to NOT say the Sanskrit asana terms because if a person is not familiar with Sanskrit - to use the English terms. 00:45:10 Jessica Jacovitch (she/her): You could also try to find a common point of agreement and ask a question to the adults..ie "would it be helpful if students could use a phrase or breathing exercise to help calm down in your classroom?" 00:45:21 Justine (she/her): Students need to blow off steam! 00:45:41 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "You could also try t..." with ☝️ 00:48:11 Jessica Jacovitch (she/her): I need to head out early, but so good to be in this convo today💖 00:48:20 Justine (she/her): Have the same routines - and embedded within the routine is choice 🙂 00:48:23 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "I need to head out e..." with ❤️ 00:48:56 Eilene Franco-Brooks: Thank you all so much for your help and support! 00:49:24 Bonnie (she/they): Reacted to "Thank you all so muc..." with ❤️ 00:51:14 Justine (she/her): Replying to "Linking on to your “..." The explanation: If a person is trying to relax within an asana and the facilitator uses the Sanskrit term(s), then the person who is in a dysregulated state may not know what it is, will look around to see what the pose is because they don’t know the term and create more stress on their nervous system. 00:51:19 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "Thank you all so muc..." with ❤️ 00:51:56 Eilene Franco-Brooks: Reacted to "Linking on to your “..." with ❤️ 00:52:07 Eilene Franco-Brooks: Reacted to "The explanation: If ..." with 👍🏼 00:53:06 Constina: Reacted to "Linking on to your “..." with ❤️ 00:53:24 Justine (she/her): I would suggest - find the language that they’re using in the district (Social Emotional Learning, a.k.a SEL language)- and use the terms. 00:53:58 Constina: Reacted to "I would suggest - fi..." with ❤️ 00:54:14 Eilene Franco-Brooks: Replying to "I would suggest - fi..." Yes, I have been named the SEL Coordinator. 00:54:21 Justine (she/her): Reacted to "Yes, I have been nam..." with ♥️ 00:54:24 Constina: Reacted to "Yes, I have been nam..." with ❤️ 00:56:31 dana (she/her): I really appreciate this whole entire discussion: the identification of the reality of "cross-purposes" and how to navigate that juncture is REALLY BENEFICIAL!! 01:02:33 dana (she/her): Replying to "I really appreciate ..." It makes me think of our respective yoga practices as "theory of change" which you mentioned in a previous email... ❤️ I'm reflecting on how this shifts and deepens how we share practice to contribute to the conditions for liberation and justice. 01:02:35 Justine (she/her): Thank you. That’s my “rigid thinking” stuff. 01:03:01 Constina: Reacted to "It makes me think of..." with 👆🏽 01:03:01 Susanna Barkataki (she/her): Reacted to "It makes me think of..." with 👆🏽 01:03:07 Susanna Barkataki (she/her): Replying to "I really appreciate ..." YES!! 01:03:35 Justine (she/her): I love that - “It’s okay to breathe.” 01:04:32 Justine (she/her): Replying to "I would suggest - fi..." A lot to navigate 🙂
